Hi, my name is Stu Andrews, and I’m a player of Computer Games.
The last computer game I bought was Depths of Peril, back in June (2008). It’s only 4 months, but I can honestly say it feels a LOT longer.
Back then, I made a decision. Games would only be bought every six months. This included not only my precious PC games, but also Wii and DS (those are the current consoles we’ve got. N64 and XBox didn’t really figure into my estimation :).
For the first couple of months, it was easy. There were no games that called. Then, last month, the Enhanced Edition of The Witcher came out for download (had the original). This allowed me to take a break from working late nights for a while.
It’s November, and the exciting games are mounting up. The World of Goo. Sacred 2. Fable 2 (although not having an XBox 360 helps there). The second Penny Arcade Adventure. Wrath of the Lich King is almost here. The list goes on.
There’s one month left to go. It’s going to be hard. Especially considering this week is holidays for me.
I haven’t talked about _why_ I’m limiting myself (and the family) to buying every six months. That’s for another post. But I’ll finish asking the question:
Is money the only reason you limit your Computer Game buying?
Depths of Peril is a great game.
I started a few characters, and then settled on the Rogue. I was blazing along, and after a while, started wiping out the other Covenants in town.
The iron was hot. I smashed em all, except one. Not sure why I left this sucker alone, but I was so far ahead in the ranking that it didn’t seem a problem.
Now, they are so far ahead of me that I’m not sure if I can do better.
The moral of this story? Strike! Don’t worry about making the game longer than it is. Characters carry onwards into new games.
Also, don’t name your female Rogue “Abel”.
I’ve been playing a fair bit of Mass Effect lately, the PC Version.
It’s good. The story is good, although I seem to like Planescape’s more. This might be because it’s a fantasy setting. It’s probably because Planescape has been the apple of my game-eye for so many years now.
The shooter side of things is fun. I’m not a shooter fan so much. I don’t slide through those games with effortless ease. But it’s good. I like it.
Still, something in me yearns for another Planescape, another Baldur’s, another Ultima (the good ones, you know who you are).
Starting out, I had trouble using SLI. Big trouble. Like huge slow down. Switching it off gave me great frame rates. Of course, I had neglected to update my drivers since about November last year. Bad mojo.
So with a flurry, the drivers were upgraded (thanks to LaptopVideo2Go) and we were away.
Man alive! I mean .. Mass Effect! Awesome. I can play on full settings, and nary a slowdown to be seen (except for that treacherous Council place). It’s a lot of fun looking at things the way they were meant to be dreamt of (heh heh). Makes me not so eager to lash out for the 8800 upgrade that’s on the cards.
Over the last few months I’ve managed to find some really cool blogs. Good gaming blogs mostly, but other stuff too.
For a while now, in these blogs, Depths of Peril keeps getting kudos. So after a few hours playing the demo .. what can I say but BUY!
This gives me an idea. What about a place you can go .. and the opinionated author gives you a “BUY” or “DO NOT GO NEAR” rating on games.
Hmmm.
I’ll probably have more thoughts on it soon. In fact, I’ll have more thoughts on other particles of life soon too no doubt. Need to get back into the Stu Talks.
